Fire!
In the afternoon of 19 December 1992, two boys entered the church by breaking a toilet window. They set fire to several items and by nightfall the church was well ablaze with flames coming through the chancel roof.
A neighbour raised the alarm and the fire brigade was called. By about 9 p.m. the fire was under control, but damage amounting to £400,000 had been caused. Many people in Acomb and beyond responded with help. Following extensive restoration and modifications the church was rededicated on 17 September 1994.
